Welcome to the Helpful Humanist. The purpose of this website is to answer questions from a Humanist perspective and explain and promote some of the key strategies to living a happy, healthy, helpful life. It is meant to be inclusive of both secular humanism and the various forms of religious humanism.
In this context Humanism is being described as a worldview based on human rights and science. Humanists base their moral compass on human rights and human wellbeing in the here and now. They base their knowledge on the consensus view of science and related evidence-based fields of inquiry.
This description of Humanism, while somewhat different than traditional definitions, highlights the two core ideas most fundamental to a humanistic philosophy. If you want to know what the Humanist view is on any given subject, you only need to figure out what the human rights and/or scientific position is. It’s really that simple.
Highlighting our basis for morals and knowledge is a good way to encourage people to examine what the actual basis for their morals and knowledge is. Many moderate and nominally religious people largely agree with these ideas, often holding potentially conflicting religious or supernatural views on only a handful of issues.
One of the advantages of this description is it avoids contrasting religious versus secular people as if they were two opposing groups by highlighting our common humanity and the fact that we all must learn to live together here on our beautiful planet earth.
